late cancellation and no-show policy

For late cancellations with less than 24-hours notice, or no-shows, I charge my full session fee. This is because I am making a time commitment and holding it exclusively for you.

This does not apply in cases of emergencies, such as sudden illness. Also, please be aware that health insurance companies will not cover fees for missed or cancelled sessions. You will be responsible for paying the full session amount if you miss a session or cancel without notifying me via phone or e-mail at least 24 hours in advance.

I am currently an out-of-network provider. This means I can provide you with a superbill that you can submit to your insurance network, which may or may not cover part of your session fee. It is your responsibility to check with your insurance company ahead of time about whether and how much they will reimburse you.

Before beginning therapy, please be sure to check your insurance benefits if you choose to use insurance. While I typically confirm benefits for new clients upon submitting claims for the first time, it is the client's responsibility to ensure coverage prior to beginning therapy. Some questions to ask your insurance provider:

  • Do I have out-of-network insurance benefits for mental health?

  • What is my deductible? How much has been met so far?

  • How many sessions per year are covered?

  • What dollar amount or percentage are reimbursed per therapy session for an out-of-network provider?

  • What is the max session fee that is reimbursable?

  • Do I need approval from my primary care doctor?

  • What forms do I need to file? How do I file these forms?

Things to consider when using health insurance:

When using insurance, coverage is based on the rules of that insurance company. This means that the insurance company could determine the length of our appointments, type of therapy covered, and number of appointments that they would cover. In addition, it is a requirement to provide a mental health diagnosis (such as Major Depressive Disorder) when billing insurance, which then becomes part of your permanent medical record.

When paying for therapy out-of-pocket, you and I can determine the best treatment, length of appointments, and there is no diagnosis required. There is no third party involvement, and, therefore, your treatment remains private unless you choose to disclose that information. This means that we can focus on what is important -- your healing and growth -- rather than what is necessary as part of the rules of the insurance company.
